Dating with Depression

By Jaime Charlies

Nothing can be more upsetting than getting turned down by someone of the opposite sex especially when you are dealing with depression. Rest assured this is not the end of the world. Since dating can be fun it can also help us out tremendously when we are feeling depressed. Having someone to talk to and be with will naturally lift your spirits up. But remember to keep cool and follow these general guidelines when dating while depressed.

You may feel exhilarated on the first date, but as time goes on and you continue to date the person, things become routine. That initial rush of excitement is gone and for some people, they become addicted to that initial surge of excitement to feel good. To combat this, keep the relationship fresh by doing new things.

If you dwell on the possibility of rejection, you'll reject yourself before you even ask. Imagine asking one of your relatives to dinner - they would say yes because they love you unconditionally, right? Think about speaking to them when you ask the person out. Even if someone declines your invitation, just learn from that experience and move on to someone else. Feeling sorry or angry will only hold you back from dating someone who wants to date you. Everyone gets rejected now and then, but the persistent people are the ones who get dates.

YOUR FIRST DATE: Congratulations! Someone accepted your invitation to go on a date. On the first date, you'll probably be excited and thrilled. As you go on more dates with the person, you might feel your feelings become less intense. Your activities may become routine. You can keep things exciting by suggesting new activities and new topics of conversation.

WHAT TO TALK ABOUT: On first dates, the best rule is to keep the conversation positive and light. Try not to discuss mention words about depression if you can help it. There will be opportunities later if you continue dating this person. Later, as they get to know you, they'll be able to understand more of what you are dealing with. On the first date, they are making a first impression and so are you. Use it as an opportunity to find out more about the other person and talk less about yourself. Share funny stories if you can. Most people appreciate a fun, happy attitude on the first date, and they are willing to go on more dates.

Hopefully this has started you on the path to happiness with dating. Remember to keep your chin up.s

My First Encounter with my Clinical Psychologist

By Philip Fleming

When my doctor said he was referring me to a clinical psychologist, I nearly flipped out. I told him, "I'm not crazy!" and he laughed. He then tried to calm me down to explain that the anxiety attacks I was having during the last six months needed a doctor with different expertise since there is a mental aspect of its root cause that I needed to check out, and someone in the mental health field may help me with the problem, not because that I was 'crazy'.

I didn't listen to the doctor at that point.

Because I didn't listen, I refused to follow his recommendation, and I ended up coping with the anxiety attacks myself. I kept repeating the words "I'm not crazy!" to myself like some kind of mantra, but it didn't help and no matter what I tried, the anxiety attacks continued, and in fact continued to get worse.

I decided to go back to my doctor in hopes of a prescription for some treatment, pill, or anything that would require me to not go through the humiliation of seeing the shrink. When I told him that, he sat me down and gave me a stern talking to.

"A clinical psychologist is not a psychotherapist" he told me firmly. "What you are not going to do is telling everything that is going on to someone that will say to come back next week for another session. Yes, clinicians deal with mental illnesses, but they also deal with disorders that have their root cause in the mind. If you broke your leg, you wouldn't go to an ear, nose, and throat doctor to have him patch you up, would you? This situation is pretty much the same idea. Certain problems and conditions will be rooted in the mind, and it is inevitable. You are not considered crazy because of this. It only means that in order to recover, you need a doctor who can understand the mind." He then told me, in no uncertain terms, that he would not see me again for these same symptoms until I had consulted with a clinician.

Soon after, I hesitantly made my appointment after swallowing my pride. The visit was completely different to what I was expecting. Within two sessions, the psychologist had helped me to figure out the root cause of my anxiety attacks and had prescribed a course of treatment to help me face down the fear that was keeping me up at nights and causing me to clam up whenever confronted by a challenging task. He was professional and thorough, and as I began to reclaim my personal power it occurred to me to wonder, why is it that so many people have such a skewed perception of the world of mental health practitioners?

Does the 'rugged individualism' trait embedded in most Americans play a role in it because they believe that they can do it on their own without being reliant on anyone or anything? Or is it more likely the fact that we see the concept of mental health portrayed by Hollywood as being synonymous with mental illness?

During one session with my clinician, I asked him the question, and he tries to explain it to me. The clinician proceeded with the explanation about how medicine has been around for at least hundreds, if not, thousands of years for treatment of any complaint and illness, whereas the idea of the mind needing separate treatments and attention is a fairly new idea. The concept was only looked at for over a hundred years, and before then, the mind, thoughts, and perception of reality was not something to talk about as it was related to religion and mysticism in the past.

Clinical psychologists are still paving their road into the medical field, and I feel that it is a necessary one because my anxiety attacks deteriorated over the last few months of treatment. I have also gained a new respect for the world of mental health and what it has to offer.

Avoid Depression, Eat Protein

By Jaime Charlies

There are many anti-depressants and medicines designed to treat symptoms of depression in the market today. One naturally-produced and effective solution may be P11, which is a protein. In January of 2006, a group of scientists reported that their studies on the relationship between protein and depression showed that P11 affected depression symptoms significantly. This protein has the ability to regulate serotonin, which is a chemical in the brain that determines mood swings and intensity. Serotonin levels have long been known to affect anxiety disorders and depression. If you are depressed this is good news!

In various previous studies done prior to these new discoveries, Serotonin had been linked with depression and also anxiety disorders. The interesting thing about all of this is that Serotinon is what nearly every anti-depressant is made to date, is supposed to regulate, including Prozac.

P11 accomplishes the same regulation without creating the side effects. Paxil is another drug currently on the market, which targets 5-HT receptors and yet does not have the same side effects as Prozac. If you are wondering whether P11 is a cure, the answer is still not yet determined. Studies are still underway. The key issue is that different people react differently to medicines, based on their genetic makeup and lifestyle. P11 may have varying effects on people. It also may be a good treatment option, rather than a cure.

If you struggle with depression and would like to try P11, ask your doctor what he or she recommends. If and when you try the protein, be on the lookout for side effects. If you experience any, contact your doctor. P11 is a naturally-produced, organic protein that as such cannot be patented by pharmaceutical companies. These companies may include P11 in their drug formulas for depression, but they cannot patent the protein itself because it occurs naturally.

P11 is a naturally-produced, organic protein. As such, no drug company can claim it or patent it. However, many pharmaceutical companies may be considering including P11 as an ingredient in drug formulas marketed to treat depression symptoms.

Entrepreneur Alert! Since p11 is a natural (completely organic) chemical it cannot be patented! Similar to how no one can patent depression quotes which may have the power to help people through depression. Using p11 in future antidepressants will soon be huge. The funds to get such a business started are unknown, but you could do some research and some deep pocket investing to be the first to jump on this market.

Favorite Bible Verses On Anxiety

By Casandra Newton

Many people wonder what it would be like to enjoy life without anxiety. Numerous individuals push and shove to get their seats at a concert, tailgate other cars, and race through their days in a frantic manner. In searching for a cure for this painful state of uneasiness, some people choose to explore Bible verses on anxiety. The following are some things God has to say about how humans should deal with anxious feelings.

The book of Psalms, verse 22 of chapter 55, states that believers should cast their cares on the Lord and be sustained by Him. Many theologians state that this essentially means turning over whatever one is anxious about to God. In doing so, many individuals feel less stress concerning their own problems.

In Psalms chapter 42 verse 5, the author asks himself "why is my soul fretful? I must put my hope in God." Religious scholars state that the term soul in the King James version of the Bible was not used interchangeably with the word spirit, but rather it referred to one's emotions and intellect. Most scholars agree that in this verse, the psalmist is speaking to his emotions from his spirit and essentially telling himself not to worry because his hope is in God.

In verse 5 of the 7th chapter of first Peter, another intriguing solution to anxious thoughts is found. Here, the apostle Peter tells those to whom he is writing to turn their anxieties over to Jesus, for He cares for them watchfully and affectionately. Many contemporary ministers claim that according to this verse, asking God for grace to carry one's burdens is not biblical. Rather, Christians are to cast their burdens on God.

Professionals in the field of modern psychology have discovered that anxious individuals usually focus on their problems. In a similar way, those who live in a state of optimism and gratitude rarely experience anxiety. This is explained in another way in Philippians chapter 4 verse 6. The apostle Paul, who is the book's author, tells his parishioners not to be anxious for anything, but rather to pray about their challenges and difficulties.

In subsequent verses, the apostle goes on to tell believers the things on which they should focus. These include things that are true, praiseworthy, beautiful, admirable, and virtuous. He also instructs them to meditate on things that are "of good report", which in modern English means those things that are positive.

This advice is very similar to that given by today's therapists and psychologists, who also instruct individuals to refuse to focus on negative aspects and look for the positive in every situation instead. Therefore, it is possible that many people in the secular world now agree with the aforementioned biblical principles.

Finally, in II Corinthians chapter ten, believers are told to "take each thought into captivity". As previously mentioned, the King James translation of the Bible may obscure the meaning of certain verses for some individuals. However, religious scholars agree that this phrase essentially means to examine one's thoughts and reject the ones that are evil or negative. There are many Bible verses on anxiety, and the references listed above are just a sample. Many people have found significant help from these verses when dealing with anxiety and its negative effects.

If we lay down our anxieties at the foot of the cross, then God will comfort us. He will wash us free of sin and condemnation through the blood of Jesus Christ.

It is important to be realistic and know that this life is not going to be easy. However, it is a lot easier when we lean on God. Our sins are forgiven and we are no longer condemned.
